If you are aspiring to be a DJ, then it is quite an exciting endeavor that may be demanding most so when it comes to selecting the type of equipment to use. They are available in countless models, designs, for beginners, professional, and for specific genres and performances.
This article will be useful for those who have not yet decided on a profession and are choosing a starter set, as well as for an intermediary who decided to upgrade their equipment, and for a professional who needs the best equipment to create their masterpiece.
The first thing in making a correct decision is to understand your level of skill. The equipment that one requires to use when he/she is a beginner is quite different from that required when one is an intermediate or a professional DJ. Likewise, it is equally unwise to spend money on expensive equipment when one cannot efficiently use the tools and equipment.
This guide will also categorize the equipment based on the skill level, the features worthy of consideration, and our recommendations which will assist you in making the right decision.
For a beginner, they should not try to complicate their work and as such, the focus should be on mastering the basics. This involves learning how to beat, match, mix and become familiar with the DJ software.
When you are starting and especially if you are doing it for leisure, you do not need to go for the most expensive materials that are out there in the market. This is instead of going for professional gears that you can only afford to practice with without making any profits.

Great keyboard stand
This stand came well packaged and was very easy to assemble. It is super sturdy … it holds my Korg Nautilus 88 (51 lbs) on the lower level without any difficulty; it could probably hold me! I currently have a lighter midi controller on the top level, but it can safely hold my Korg Krome 88 (35 lbs) with no concerns. The stand isn’t as stable as my wife’s Yamaha upright grand, of course, but I have always used X stands in the past and this stand is significantly more stable than those. I highly recommend this to anyone with a large, heavyweight keyboard or two.
It is quite usual to feel that the equipment used in the initial steps hinders one’s progress as a dancer. The midrange DJ equipment should have more features such as improved sound quality, additional controls, and compatibility with better software. This is also the time that you may consider adding more accessories like turntables or better mixers into your systems.
Technologically sophisticated professional DJs need high-quality equipment suitable for their line of duty, which involves usage frequently. Here the equipment should be the best in terms of audio performance, constructiveness, and functionality and flexibility that can enable you to perform and record like a pro. Professional Disc Jockeys always ensure that they use the best equipment which include the turntables, the mixers, the controllers and the speakers.
Here is a comparison table explaining the requirements of Beginner, intermediate and advanced DJs !

For beginners who are entering the world of DJing, then DJ controllers will prove advantageous because they are affordable, portable and easy to use. Many of them come with a sound card as a built-in feature thus there is no necessity for the system to install a sound card.
The following are the factors that you need to look for when selecting a DJ controller:
Number of Channels: It is recommended that a beginner controller have two channels at the most because the basic skills require only two channels.
Pads: Search for controllers that have sensitive pads for cue points, loops and samples to be triggered.
Jog Wheels: A high quality jog wheel is necessary to increase the control of the track movements.
Knobs and Faders: It is good to ensure that the knobs and the faders on the equipment are strong and responsive to enable easy control.
DJ Controller Compatibility: Ensure that the controller comes with compatibility with common software programs such as Serato, Traktor or Rekordbox.
For the beginners, it is essential to determine which DJ software is best for you. Many DJ controllers are sold with certain software, and the software should be simple and have the all the features that you require. The following are some of the options that the learners can take into consideration especially when they are new to animation and film:
Serato DJ Lite: This is a basic version of Serato DJ Pro and is mostly recommended to newbies and has basic features of mixing and beatmatching.
Rekordbox DJ: This is definitely the Pioneer software that is rather well-known and quite helpful, especially for beginners, offering a vast amount of functions.
Virtual DJ: Unlike some other software, Virtual DJ has a simple interface that is ideal for beginners.
A good set of headphones is a tool that is required for cueing tracks and also for monitoring the mix. Look for headphones that offer:
Closed-Back Design: This makes it easier in avoiding spillage of sound to other speakers in the project.
The most essential quality for headphones which users must wear for extended periods becomes comfort.
The perfect headphones maintain an even frequency response curve to deliver original audio quality without altering any sound range or frequencies.
Regardless of whether you are using headphones, speaker is a must when it comes to listening to your mix. For beginners, it is more convenient to use active speakers – these are models equipped with amplifiers. Look for speakers that offer:
Power output: Check that the speakers should be powerful enough to provide enough bass for the practice area.
Frequency Response: A good speaker should be able to produce sound at different frequency ranges that is through amplifying all the frequencies present in the mix.
Portability: In the case where you are using your speakers at small gigs, it becomes essential to consider portability.
People should evaluate these elements while choosing turntables:
A direct drive technology in turntables results in more durable construction using higher torque than belt driven turntables made for professional DJ applications.
DJ musical transitions require precise pitch control thus DJs should look for equipment featuring a precise pitch control system.
The turntables should feature a design which enables their daily use without encountering structural failures.
A good mixer is very crucial since it helps in mixing two or more tracks and also applying effects. Some of the important aspects that an individual should consider whenever he is selecting the right mixer include the following:
Number of Channels: This is an important factor because it is recommended that intermediate DJs should go for mixers with at least two channels, four channels are however preferred.
The equalizer and filter: Choose products that have a high-quality equalizer and filter for further sound customization.
Some mixers have their built-in effect, which is useful to add creativity to your mix.
Crossfader: This should provide a gradual and solid crossfader in order to switch from one channel to the other without any jutter.
As you advance, it might be beneficial to get a specific sound card or audio interface. These devices have improved on the sound quality and the connectivity and are suitable for home use and live performances.
Professional booths employ monitor speakers to listen to ongoing mixed audio.
Using a headphone amplifier enables DJs to achieve superior sound quality while giving them enhanced control over their headphone volume. Monitor Speakers serve as control devices which allow users in the control or booth room to adjust both volume and equalization settings of their monitor speaker.
At some point you play at larger venues, so it is important to have a good monitoring and booth. This includes:
Serato Scratch Live functions as a leading DVS among professional DJs because its sound quality excels along with compatibility with Serato DJ Pro.Traktor Scratch Pro 3 functions as the most capable version of these settings because it provides professionals with extensive DJ optimization possibilities.
In the process of your evolution as a DJ, you might find that you’d like to work with a more sophisticated software with some extra capacities. Some of the popular options that can be adopted by the intermediate DJs include:
Serato DJ Pro: This tool is one of the best available tool in the market for mixing, effects and tracks control.
Traktor Pro 3: This DJ software has more features and settings than many of the standard DJ tools, making it fit for intermediate level DJs.
Rekordbox DJ: Pioneer has its software that is quite functional and is among the most popular in the market.
Professional DJ Equipment: The Complete Setup
Turntables and mixers are essential tools of trade in the professional field, and only the best can meet the demands of the professionals. The following factors should be considered when selecting turntables and mixers:
Durability: The gears that are used in professional applications should be constructed to stand up to intensive usage and mobility.
Sound Quality: The turntables and mixers to be purchased should have good sound qualities and minimal noise production.
For professional DJs, it will be good to look for mixers with additional features like the multi-band EQ, effects, and the routing options.
Scratch application enables DJs to manipulate the digital music files using a turntable system known as the Digital Vinyl Systems or DVS. This format is essentially halfway between the vinyl feel, coupled with the advantages of having the files available in digital format. There are several factors that need to be taken into consideration while selecting the DVS for your organization as mentioned below:
Compatibility: Check whether the DVS is compatible with your DJ software and hardware.
Sound Quality: Ensure that the DVS has a good audio quality and has minimal delay.
Functionality: The ideal DVS should also be easy to install and operate especially for live performances.
For the professional DJs, there are advanced controllers and all in one systems which are more contemporary. These are integrated devices that work like mixer, controller and sound cards at one place. These are the factors to consider when choosing an advanced controller or an all-in-one system:
Construction: Controllers used in professional environment should be built for durability and for portability.
Sound Quality: Choose the controllers that have a great sound quality and minimal noise production.
Parameters: Additional, professional DJs should seek controllers that embrace some or all of these features; multi-band EQ, effects, and routing.

AWESOME Fat Toad DJ Booth
Used it several times. Easy set up, sturdy for all my lights especially for my moving heads. Very awesome set on my part...
Professional DJs use audio equipment and loudspeakers that give emphasis on quality and loudness in order to suit the large events. The following factors should be put into consideration when selecting the system,
Volume: Make sure that the power of the sound system is adequate to cover the area that is to be filled with sound.
Frequency Response: A wide frequency response means that frequencies are reproduced with high amounts of accuracy across a wide frequency range.
Mobility: If you expect to move your sound system from one place to another, mobility is a factor of consideration.
Lighting and visual effects are an addition that could complement the show of the DJ. In regard to the light and visuals, it is important to remember that:
Compatibility: Check whether the lighting and visual effects you are going to use are compatible with your DJ software and hardware.
Functionality: A good lighting system should be easy to operate and install particularly during the event.
Versatility: Choose the lighting systems with the ability to play a great variety of tricks and options.
A good quality microphone is very important when it comes to MCing, making announcements and live performances. Some of the factors that one has to consider are:
Type: Dynamic microphones are more rugged and ideal for live performances as compared with condenser microphones that provide a better sound quality.
Wireless: It has more flexibility as compared to wired microphones, while Wired: It is more reliable than the wireless microphones.
Sound Quality: To select the right microphone, it is necessary to choose the microphones that provide high-quality sound clarity and precision.
Depending on the type of music that you are going to play, you need to choose the type of DJ equipment appropriately. For instance, if you perform hip-hop, your preferred equipment will be turntables and a mixer for scratching and beat juggling. On the other hand, if you are an EDM DJ, you may need a controller with more effects and looping features as opposed to a controller that has limited effects.
The choice of equipment also depends on the size and type of venue where one is performing most of the time. For small halls, a small-sized controller and two active speakers would suffice. For larger venues you will require a more effective speaker system, vinyl records players, some of the best mixers available in the market.
The budget is one of the crucial issues that define the choice of equipment among DJs. Despite this, one may be tempted to use costly gear, which should not be the case since you will be using the equipment in line with your abilities and requirements. You do not need to spend a lot initially and can purchase a relatively cheap controller and speakers to start with as you can always upgrade as you go along.
If you are going to travel often to perform in different gigs, portability is a very crucial factor to consider. This one should also be portable and lightweight since you may need to carry them from one place to another. If you are a professional and use equipment in your home studio, club, or any other fixture, you can afford to buy more powerful equipment.
The choice between digital, vinyl and hybrid setup depends with the kind of music that one plays and the preference of the individual. Digital setups are more convenient and versatile as compared to the vinyl setups as they provide a more realistic feel to the work. Hybrid systems are the ones which have the capability to use both the digital and vinyl formats of music.
Consequently, some some of the factors to consider when selecting DJ equipment include the following:
A crucial aspect that has to be taken into consideration when it comes to DJ equipment is audio quality. Seek for the equipment that reproduces sound quality, has low noise and frequency response.
Tools that are meant for professional use should be made in a way that they can endure the frequent use and transportation. Seek for the equipment that is made from high quality material that will enable it to remain relevant for quite some time.
Make sure that your DJ equipment can integrate with widely used DJ software. It will enable you to leverage more and optimize all the features while working on the process.
The connectivity of DJ equipment and the inputs and outputs available should also be considered. Choose equipment that are compatible with a number of connection types like USB, XLR and RCA in case one equipment does not jell well with the other.
Regarding the equipment, ergonomics and positioning of the DJ equipment is vital to avoid any strains and to ensure that the equipment can be easily accessed. Ensure that equipment has a reasonable design on the location of its controls and the features that can be accessed easily.
The application's advanced effects and processing capabilities can enhance creativity and richness in the mixes. The equipment should be able to provide various effects, such as reverberation, delay, and filters, as well as complex processing features, such as multi-band equalizers and compression.
