What’s the standard size for piano benches? 

When it comes to piano benches, there really isn’t a standard size. 

The most common size is 30”W x 19”H and around 15” deep. But piano benches come in a variety of sizes to fit a variety of people. There are adjustable benches for shorter and taller people or for pianos which may have multiple piano players using them, like a school or church. There are wider piano benches for larger players as well as for playing piano duets. 

Is a piano bench necessary?

YES! A piano not only looks nice, but it also plays an important role in keeping a pianist sitting in the proper manner which will relieve stress on the hips, back, and shoulders. 

How do I go about choosing a bench for me? 

There are several factors you should consider when purchasing a new piano bench. The most important is your size. A good idea would be to first use a kitchen chair at your piano. If that is the right height for you, then you should measure the height of that chair and go from there. If the chair is too tall or short, you can still measure the height and determine how much taller or shorter your bench needs to be. You may decide that an adjustable-height bench would be best suited for you. Another thing to take into consideration is how long you play your piano at a time. If you are only using your piano for practicing 15 or 20 minutes each day, really thick padding is probably not a concern you will have. But, if you’re playing at a church concert for 2 hours, you’ll want to find a bench with lots of padding. The color of your piano matters as well. A dark brown piano isn’t going to go well with a tan bench. Many benches also have a seat that flips up which will hold some of your music. And, of course, cost is a major factor for many people these days. Buying the cheapest bench you can find is probably a bad idea. But purchasing the most expensive piano bench is probably not a good idea either. You should match the price to your needs and how excellent of a piano you have. The nicer the piano, the better looking you want your bench to be.
